  • D-Day 75th Anniversary SPECIAL EVENT

    D-Day 75th Anniversary SPECIAL EVENT

    N/A
    Thu 6th Jun 2019 Sat 8th Jun 2019

SARS have planned a special event to mark the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings.

This will include on air activity in cooperation with other radio groups such as VMARS. Please see www.vmars.org.uk

We intend to use equipment that would have been operational on the day such as WS19 and WS62. Additionally we will have a display of operational Clansman HF and VHF radios that will be used during the event..

We will be operating special event callsign GB2SF (Sword Force), appropriate to the forces that departed from this part of the South East, landing on Sword Beach. Special QSL cards and certificates may be available for those contacting the station and meeting certain criteria..

Beachy Head had a special significance on D-Day due to the location of a Decca station. This new proprietary technology was used to fix positions for the deployment of equipment and troops on the beaches of Normandy. Chain Home Low DF transmitters were also located on Beachy Head during these times.

Radio activities on the 6th will start early in the morning on 3.615MHz using Amplitude Modulation from vintage equipment.  We will also be active on 51.70MHz FM and other HF frequencies during the period. Further details will be published on the Front page of this site in due time.

Members are encouraged to get involved with this once-in-a-lifetime event. It is planned to occupy our Beachy Head site 24 hours a day during these events. There will be a display of vintage equipment, military style camp plus BBQ on Thursday..
